We need a lot more information than that. Why are you applying the diff?
 Are you running Gentoo? If so, why not just emerge it? If not, what
flavor are you running? It might not be necessary to apply it.

you apply diff's using the patch command (man patch). In this
circumstance, I think it would be this:

cat gentoo.diff | patch -p0
