I see the exact same thing. My setup is similar (FC4, FreeNX 0.4.4, NX Windows
client).
That's a nice trick with the DISPLAY=localhost command. For Gnome, one can run
gnome-session instead of startkde.
It doesn't help if you use the latest and greatest NX components, either -- same
problem seen with the fourth release of the NX Windows Client, and with the NX
server RPMs described in the thread "NX Server RPMS second maintenance release".
