Bob we've had good success putting in place a
config file server side:

/etc/nxserver/node.conf.d/10SiteDefaults

containing the directive:

USER_FAKE_HOME=/tmp/NX-$USER

which puts the ~/.nx data into

/tmp/NX-$USER/.nx/
