New releases for bugfixes

I'd be willing to invest some time and give this a try for Gear. Even 
though I fear our tooling and/or some cmake parts will break (which may be 
a nice incentive to improve it).

However, besides the how-bad-do-the-bugs-need-to-be-criteria, which Nate 
addressed, the question where to release from is still open. Personally, I 
think it's best to release from the stable branch, not from a special 
release branch, which only includes the fix. Chances are least some people 
build and run from there and it is CI covered.

If we'll make these additional releases, I'd also like to collect some 
stats (repology should make that pretty easy) if (and maybe how fast) these 
releases reach distros.
