everything true, good explanation. In this case however, it might be
sufficient to configure a /16 Subnet mask for the interfaces. I believe the
default in most OS is /24 which is too large for this particular case.

Exactly. Without knowing your OS we can't get more specific. Search
additionally for subnet mask configuration.
