Alan,
I don’t use heirarchical tags at all. I create individual tags for each aspect of the photo, for example: year, person’s name, location, etc. this way I can do simple searches on any of those tags, plus you can use the search tab on left sidebar to create far more sophisticated searches. digiKam is an amazing piece of software!
