Strange Filter Behavior

I have a very strange situation. As part of my Digikam 8.6.0 organization structure, I have a hierarchical tag structure that is Tags > Events > Year > Event Name. An example is Tag > Events > 1984 > 1984-05-14 - Cape Hatteras Surfing.

The idea is that I can take all photos from a year and assign them under Events, like "1984" in the example Then I can take certain photos and assign them to a specific event, liked "1984-05-14 - Cape Hatteras Surfing" in the example.

I have 42 years (1984 through 2025) structured like this.

After assigning all photos to specific events, I always have photos left over in that year that aren't tagged with any event. I am trying to identify these non-event random photo so I can tag them with a tag named "Not Currently in Event".

I've successfully done this for 31 of 42 by using the following method.

  * I choose the album for a year, which is found under Tag > Year, a higher level and different part of my tag structure than the Events subtag section.
  * I then select all Event check boxes for that year using the Filter tab at right.
  *   I select all these with Cntl-A.
  * I then click the year tag box at top of the Events folder so the non-event photos show as well. Now all photos for that year appear with only the photos which are assigned to an Event highlighted.
  * I then click Invert Selection, and the non-Event photos will be highlighted instead.
  * I add the now-highlighted photos to the "Not Currently in Event" tag.
  * Now all photos in a year are assigned either to an Event or the tag "Not Currently in Event", so all photos of the year are categorized.

For 31 of the Years this worked. But for 11 of these Years, when I clicked the Year box, and all the photos appears, ALL the photos are now highlighted rather than just the Event categorized photos. So I can't tell what I should add to the "Not Currently in Event" tag category.

There must be some structural difference to how I tagged photos in these 11 galleries. Or perhaps there is a Digikam glitch?

I've gone round and round with ChatGPT to try and solve this behavior but to no avail. ChatGPT keeps giving me things to try, but none work.

Does anyone know what might be happening? I can gladly supply screen shots to help diagnose.

Thank, Wes
