How to change avatar image (icon) for people tags

I've looked through all the help on face tags and tags. And I've 
googled.

I want to be able to assign a "face" as the avatar for a people tag. Or 
any tag really. I've tried right-clicking on an identified face but 
there is no option like "set as icon". The auto detection sometimes 
assigns faces to the avatars, but I can't get it to do so. I remove the 
face tag from an image. I redetect the face. I assign the appropriate 
tag to the face tag. And the avatar icon stays as either a smiley face 
or as the "tags" avatar.

What is the secret, if any, to assigning the icons to the people tags?
