Again, it depends on your digiKam settings.  I have digiKam set to monitor for changes, so it automatically pulls in any changed images or metadata a few minutes after it is changed. Go to Settings->Metadata->Behavior and make sure “Rescan file when files are modified” is checked.

By using the database=:memory: darktablerc setting, Darktable will automatically read the image and the xmp sidecar every time it’s opened since there is no database for it to read from.  Because the pick flag and tags are written to industry standard metadata locations by digiKam, Darktable see them and use them.
