If you're using SQLite, create a backup copy of the digikam4.db file.

Don't take any action at this time, so use the last selection. After starting 
digiKam, you'll only see thumbnails and won't be able to open the images. Then 
go to the digiKam settings under Collections and click the "update" button 
behind the corresponding collection (circle icon). Set the new path to your 
copied images. Make sure it's the same path hierarchy as before.
