I am in a very similar situation. However, I don’t use digiKam to
process my RAW images, because coming from Lightroom, I was
uncomfortable with the UI and the features. I use instead ART
(http://art.pixls.us/) [1] for processing, and digiKam to manage
(browsing, tagging, ranking. slideshows...).
I used a powerful laptop (i7-9750H, 6 cores) for a while, but I had the
same problem as you. It was usable but the delays in ART were
frustrating. So I switched to a desktop with a Ryzen 9 7900 (12 cores),
and now the performance is OK.
Hopefully, that helps, even if it does not answer directly your
question.
