I see two options (besides the appimage):
- find a repo for your distribution which has the latest version (needs a 
volunteer to maintain the repo)
- compile from sources, which requires you to install development packages for 
all dependencies *with the proper versions*.

If there is no third-party build for your distro, the simplest is using the 
appimage. Personally, I stay away from flatpak or snap, the sandboxing can 
cause issues when using external libraries not planned for in the package???
