sidecar files

Here is a link to the Digikam manual meta data settings page for side
cars:
https://docs.digikam.org/en/setup_application/metadata_settings.html#sidecars-settings

Regarding file syntax, quoting Remco: "And digkam only writes to sidecar
files with the naming
 > <basename>.<ext>.xmp."
That is the standard, preferred, syntax for digiKam. However, the syntax
<basename>.xmp is also available: that is what happens if you tick the
box "Sidecar file names are compatible with commercial programs". So it
is fully possible to have the digiKam to read and write using the same
syntax as the commercial sw Lightroom. But it is not the preferred
method in digiKam.
