best practices for backup / moving

I've tagged many people in my collection, and want to make sure I don't
lose all that work.

My attempts to move it to another computer keep running into problems,
though that's probably related to me wanting to simply use my portable
storage drive as the location for the sqlite database and the photos.  To
me, this seems reasonable.  Is it?
