to 1)
No, there is no option. All users involved found this line much better, modern 
and not so intrusive. It can also be seen very clearly in your screenshot.

to 2)
Tested here with the AppImage, everything is fine. Go to the digiKam settings 
and see if you have selected the Breeze Icon theme.
