digiKam feature - suggestion: Make Metadata editor features available without creating a catalog/database

To clarify, I suggest enabling use of as many Metadata Editor features as possible - including editing .xml files and fields AND editing metadata in image files, without and independently from creating & maintaining a catalog/database.

And again, someone please let me know if there is already a way to do this.

regards,
Gregg

digiKam developers & support,

This is probably going to sound unusual to those developing dikiKam as a database centric tool, however what I would love to be able to do is to use digiKams Metadata Editor to create, view, & manage .XMP side car files associated with images in a standalone mode, without creating a database, and without the database functionality.

I have read & searched the digiKam documentation, and so far as I can tell this doesn't seem to be supported. Please correct me if I'm wrong and if there is a way to do this with digiKam currently please let me know. If it is not currently supported and is remotely feasible, please consider this as an enhancement/feature request.

My application and use case is that I need a really robust & capable metadata editor (more & better features than what I have found elsewhere), for use among other things, to create & manage logical groups & albums of images, without relying on organization into folders corresponding to albums, or a database because I have a large number of images in an existing folder structure which I don't want to change.

The main reason that I don't want to use the database features is that I really don't want another database/catalog to keep in sync with changes made in other programs in addition to the two image editing & management apps that I use primarily to edit & maintain my images.

Thanks in advance and best regards,
Gregg
