digikam crashes while finding new items

Hi Gilles and all,
I have installed version 8.4 for Mac.  I transferred some new photos to my external Samsung T7 disc which DigiKam has handled without trouble before.  However, it now repeatedly crashes when trying to find the new images.  If I disconnect the T7 DigiKam opens without trouble.
The new folder of photos is readable by other imaging software on my computer (ACDSee, ON1 Raw, Fast Raw Viewer) with none of the files appearing as corrupted.
I reinstalled DigiKam and ran Disk Utility on the T7, but the problem still occurs.
I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me.
