Image search with wildcards/regexp/"OR"?

However, this would not be practical for me with 20..200 alternative
search terms (generated from a file listing or reformatted 'exiftool'
output).
My search term would look something like this (unwrapped) - with | being

An alternative would be to directly modify Digikam's database to add a
tag to images which have a named path.
I could then search by tag, and proceed further in Digikam.
I can script SQLite, I'd just need to know what to insert in which
tables to not corrupt Digikam's database.
Is this a feasible way to go?
