Further knocking on this problem leads to a question based on looking at 
random pix in the albums window, I quite often see an small popup says 
the images storage location is unknown, and this popup may eventually be 
replaced by the images properties box, as if whatever database is used, 
it finally found the image that goes with the thumbnail its showing me.
Any validity to this theory? I switched to the 8.0.0 final appimage, no 
change in the results.
If I move digiKam out of the way, I see this in the terminal it was 
launched from:
