Google Maps API key

Somewhere in the back of my mind I recall that when digiKam met its limit on Google map accesses a few years back there was a solution. It was to get a “personal” Google Maps API key and slip into digiKam’s code at your PC. Am I correct? Is that possible (and how)? Thanks
