[digiKam-users] Rescanning complete collection because disk was accidentally not mounted

In any case, if a drive is not already present at system startup, like the 
local hard drive, you should always use either the collection as removable 
media or the network collection (local hard drives it can also be used as a 
network collection).

If images no longer exist in the local collection, they are removed from the 
database. We assume that local collections are always present.
You will need to rescan all images. In the digiKam collection settings you can 
easily switch to a removable medium collection with the update tool button 
(round circle).
