You could probably remove items from the database using an external program 
(of course with a risk of database inconsistency). However, if for whatever 
reason digikam rescans the directory, the removed items will be added back to 
the database (as Andrew said, digikam's albums are a view of the directory 
structure).

But why would you want to remove specific images from digikam's view, while 
keeping them in it's directory structure, mixed in with other images?
There are ways to hide images through flags and filters, which do not require 
chirurgy on the database.

The question sounds like OP wants to implement a solution in a way not 
supported by digikam. Perhaps state the problem?
