I have a very old PC running Lubuntu 21.10 running digikam appimage 7.8.0
and I regularly update thousands of tags and write them to sidecar files.
It never takes very long.
BTW I recommend setting digikam to write tags to .xmp, so that you can use
other software to read them if necessary.
