The .tar.xz version of digiKam does not write to the Windows registry but
writes to the Users folder, specifically an AppData subfolder two levels
down in the hierarchy. This subfolder is normally stored on the
non-removable C drive.
There is a lightweight approach to running digiKam from removable storage,
such as a thumb drive, or network storage. See my forum post at
https://www.portablefreeware.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=20747&start=15#p102710
However, it has not been approved by portablefreeware.com because it uses
folder redirection. You might want to read the later posts to the topic.
Some users may have the more limited objective of specifying the name and
location of the configuration file. A user could bring their configuration
file to a computer that already had digiKam. Specifying the file would also
allow for more than one configuration.
The default configuration file is AppData\Local\digikamrc
The command line option is:
--config <config> Start digiKam with the configuration file <config>
