[digiKam-users] Description for use of collections

Hi,

I’m considering to start to use digiKam to manage my pictures. Unfortunately I’m stuck quite at the beginning of the process.

I’m wondering what the use of collections is. 
I have not found much documentation about this topic in the manual, maybe someone could give me a reference to documentation about this. Maybe my questions below will then be answered by the existing descriptions of the topic.

Here are some of my questions:

What is the difference between and use case for local, removable media and network collections from user side? 
What are the consequences if I chose one of those categories?

Is it beneficial to have multiple local collections, e.g. 
- Pictures : my actual pictures that are already processed
- Work : projects that are currently in work
- Import : pictures waiting for import

Is it possible to hide to hide some collections, e.g. Import, during normal use and just show them in case of choosing new pictures.

How do you use collections and albums?
