[digiKam-users] At startup what does Digikam scan for?

When Digikam is started what does it scan for?  I.e. will it spot
changed files as well as new ones?

I know it finds new files OK (if you tell it to) but will it see
changes and, if so, how does it do it?  Does it simply look at the
file modification date and, if it's newer than it has recorded in its
database, assume that there's a change to that image (or its metadata)?
