[digiKam-users] Question about advanced settings in digikam metadata settings

I have a couple of questions about the Advanced tab in Metadata
settings:-

Does it *only* allow setting of where 'Comment', 'Rating' and 'Tags'
are stored?  

What does "Unify read and write" mean?  Does it mean to keep the
database and the image synchronized?

Not directly to to with settings, but - is there a place to set the
character set that Digikam uses for comments etc. in metadata?  Also
how does it handle accented characters etc. allowed in some metadata
fields but not others?

(Digikam 5.6 by the way)
