Good question, and this must be ask to KDE core developpers.

You must know that we don't have any Gimp file format wrapper in digiKam
source code.

We use a plugin mechanism provided by Qt about QImage loader. KDE give the
KImgageformat framework dedicated for that and supporting Krita and Gimp
file format.

https://cgit.kde.org/kimageformats.git/tree/src/imageformats

The code in this framework is not well maintained. About Gimp support,
there are entries in bugzilla :

https://bugs.kde.org/buglist.cgi?bug_severity=critical&bug_severity=grave&bug_severity=major&bug_severity=crash&bug_severity=normal&bug_severity=minor&bug_severity=wishlist&bug_severity=task&bug_status=UNCONFIRMED&bug_status=CONFIRMED&bug_status=ASSIGNED&bug_status=REOPENED&list_id=1537207&product=frameworks-kimageformats&query_format=advanced&short_desc=xcf&short_desc_type=allwordssubstr
