Switch to Previous/Next picture from Right Panel

I did not know about SPACE/BACKSPACE and PAGEUP/PAGEDOWN. That works much
better than what I was suggesting.

PAGEUP/PAGEDOWN seems like a reasonable shortcut. I am surprised at the
operation of SPACE. On Windows that would normally toggle the checkbox of
the item you have selected in the tag window. I just checked and it does
change the thumbnail selection as you describe. This seems more like a bug
to me because I would prefer to be able to use SPACE and UPARROW/DOWNARROW
to select tag items.
