digiKam freezes when scanning a new collection

I have the same problem on a i7 CPU with 16GB Ram on a MacBookPro,
straight after a new installation.
The collection is said to be reading, but in fact digiKam becomes
unresponsive.
After a day I had to kill the process. Can't get digiKam to work at all now.
