I guess someone should post this as a Unity (and/or GNOME 3) bug and see if the developers suggest any solution.

The truth is elsewhere (:-)))... As usual with Ubuntu, nothing work as other Linux boxes...
This confirm my point of view about this distro, and you know it already.

Just a FYI, I tested the appimage on a virtual machine install of the latest Linux Mint, and it works fine, both the top menu and the one on the app menu are visible. While it should only be the top one, this is a far better result than no menu at all!

At home :
- Linux Mageia 5.1 for production, Mageia 6 (cauldron) for devel.- Centos 6.8 for AppImage build process (32/64 bits), into VirtualBox.
In my office (i work in huge French Scientific research center, about Energy) :
- Mageia 5.1 for desktop, compiler, front end applications.- CentOS 6.8 for servers.
The KDE integration in Mageia is just the best that i know.
In my office we have been forced to use Ubuntu to run specific drivers about high speed acquisition device. It have been a pain to install, to setup, to use (outside the driver installation which touch the arcanes of the system). Never talk to me about Ubuntu, it just a waste of time...
I tested, OpenSuse. Not too bad at all... KDE is well integrated.

What distribution do you use by the way?

Ubuntu + Unity desktop is really a big problem. It's also re-invent the wheel and introduce dysfunctions where it must work as expected :

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=375345

For me Ubuntu is banned from my computers (home + office).
