I would love to help you but I never use Slideshow. Perhaps reporting the bug in Bugzilla would be the best option.

I have exactly the same problem as Robert, but I cannot remember the
slide show has ever been working since digikam 5.x.

For me, the slide show is not working with large png files (ca. 100MB
each). For other file types (NEF raw or jpeg files that are smaller) the
slide show works as expected.

I am using digikam 5.5.0 from the Manjaro linux distribution.
