setting the album date by a shell script ?

My pictures are stored in a directory tree like that:

2011
 |-----20111111
 |-----20111225
2012
 |-----20120301
 |-----20120301

I would like to know if there is a way to set the album date by a shell
script?
if not, where are stored in the database this information?
