digikam 5.1.0 start-up hanging on OSX

I'm experiencing the same issue on a fresh 5.1.0 install on OS/X 10.11.6 

First the collection is created by walking through the users Picture folder and then the digiKam boot screen/logo is displayed. 

OS/X complains that the process hangs and after killing the process the following report header is created:
