I got it to work.  The lensfun data base is in a package named: 
liblensfun-data.  I found a ppa with the most recent package.  I'm not 
sure if this package replaced the data or added something else that 
allows to work with the data that I copied.  But it is working with my 
lens (and many more).

For reference, Ubuntu stores the data (xml files) in /usr/share/lensfun/
