Hi,

I also have this problem and it seems to have become worse over the last
6 months, apparently after upgrading from Ubuntu 10.04 to 11.10.
As I have a number of other weird issues appear after this upgrade that
seemed kernel based (e.g. excessive iowait problems caused by disk
journaling) I chalked it up to a kernal upgrade and have been waiting
for the latest kernels to be released with 12.04. Several updates have
now flowed through but the problem is still present.

I run... Ubuntu 11.10 + XFCE (although the problem appears in the Unity
and Gnome Classic Desktops).

I have a nVidia Corporation G84 [GeForce 8600 GT] (rev a1). Running dual
monitors.
