If I may suggest...

I'm a Gimp user too. When I do some image(s) edition, I start Digikam AND
Gimp. Then a simple mouse drag/drop between the DK album thumbnails view
and the Gimp window opens the image in Gimp.
When Gimp edition is over, save image, close image window, then next 
drag/drop from DK thumbnails view.
