To answer my own question, the problem has been caused by wrong 
parameters in the fstab mount.
So, indeed the procedure for Ubuntu->VM->Ubuntu is exact the same as 
Windows->VM->Ubuntu.
If you want to mount a ntfs drive in virtual Ubuntu the correct mount 
syntax on the master Ubuntu system should be like this:
UUID=01CC6EEE5C443EF0 /media/FOTO ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0
If this drive is mounted in Virtual Ubuntu with sudo mount -t vboxsf 
F_DRIVE FOTO (see my former description) The drive is fully accessible 
in the virtual system and digikam can be used normal. No issues with 
copying files as was the case in Windows->VM->Ubuntu.
