[Digikam-users] difference between 64 and 32 bit kubuntu for digikam

I use Kubuntu on 2 computers. They are almost identical computers from a
point of view of hardware. They are both AMD64 CPU's. Both have Kubuntu
11.04 installed and I run Digikam on both computers. The photos are
different and therefore different databases. At home I have thousands of
photos while at work only a few hundred. The only major difference
between the computers is that at work I have the 32bit Kubuntu installed
and at home the 64 bit.
Now for the problem. I was using Digikam 1.9 on both computers. With the
aid of Philip Johnsson's ppa I upgraded both computers to Digikam 2.
That's when the problems started. At work everything works ok. There is
no problem. At home I have had several problems and at the moment I have
resorted to using Digikam 1.9 again. I will try to describe the problems
as they happened and hopefully from the description I hope somebody can
help me upgrade and use Digikam 2.
After upgrading the first problem was with Showfoto2 which wouldn't open
folders. I sent a bugfile to Bugzilla as requested and I think the
problem has been solved. The next problem I posted in this forum.
Digikam2 "couldn't read my database". After help from Rinus and others I
came to the decision to go back to Digikam1.9. That was a few weeks ago.
My database was read by that version.
Recently I decided to give Digikam 2 another try. This time I have a
phenomena that I can't define as there is no notification. What happens
is that the Digikam 2 flashscreen appears for a few seconds and then
closes. Nothing follows that flashscreen. No notice, no Digikam,
nothing. It is though I haven't attempted to open a program. I can
continue to work on my computer as though nothing is wrong. In other
words Digikam doesn't freeze or disable my computer in any way. My only
solution is to go back to Digikam 1.9.
As the title of the thread suggests my (probably incorrect) conclusion
is that there is a difference between Digikam for the 32 bit Kubuntu and
the 64 bit. Is this the course to pursue?
I hope my explanation is sufficient for somebody to help me upgrade.
TIA
Errol
