I also have been using ufraw to convert my raw images before organizing in Digikam. This command works pretty well for me:

ufraw-batch --wb=camera --rotate=camera --out-type=jpeg --out-path=jpeg/ nef/*.NEF

I then have one folder nef for the raw images and one jpeg for my converted images. Afterwards I go through the jpeg's and 
if some did not have a pleasing conversion I try to improve manually using the GUI of ufraw. 

Did not know about darktable, I'll have a look.
