I do this all time, most recently a few minutes ago. You probably have
your rename string set to something like "name#" so it uses the name
and appends the a numerical sequence to every photo regardless of
extension. Instead, try "name[file]" as the rename string. The
original filename will be used and the "name" part will just be
prepended.
