I used debian for years starting in 1996 with short interludes of
redhat here and there (before fedora existed). About 3-4 years ago I
recognized that I had apparently aged, because I was less and less
interested in tweaking and just wanted things to work with minimal
intervention. Ubuntu fit my needs. Then came unity. It's been a rough
8 months. I was ready to start distro hopping again (albeit with only
with deb based systems, rpms make me angry), but over just the past
few weeks, I've found that a lot of unity related shenanigans have
been smoothed out.

I finally have sloppy focus working almost the way it should, and I
personally like the transparent scrollbars and the minimal space used
by the desktop. More room for a maximized digikam window is nice for
browsing and sorting pictures at a bit larger mag. I have the launcher
on autohide and only pop it up to launch a program from the command
line launcher. I got the shortcut keys to stop fighting me and do what
I want, and there is finally a decent monitor indicator. If smart
window placement wasn't so dumb, and the switcher would do a better
job of staying on my current desktop, I might almost be content. Up
next, I think I may try gnome-shell for a few weeks just to rule it
out. If I get ambitious enough to clear up enough harddrive space, I
might also just start running kde.
