I filed a bug because of a similar behaviour which was caused by the turning
progress circles and the method to update them. Maybe yours is related.

It depends on what it is doing. If I am e.g. processing 16 bit RAW images I
want it to use as much RAM as possible to speed things up. Of course 1.5 GB
for just browsing the pictures would be a bit too much. :)
