I also moved form Picassa to Microsoft Live photo organizer to Digikam. Digikam is a very powerful program and it takes a while to learn how to use it. Your going about it I believe in the right way. Take you time and just weather the learning curve.

the 3:2 is the same as 4:6 and 10:15. You can just rotate it if you need to.

I haven't seen any. There are lots of full image manipulation tools like you would expect for a digital asset management program but not a lot of heavy in image editing tools also what you would expect from a digital asset management program. I usually right click and open the image in Gimp.

I use Kubuntu and have a HP 812C Deskjet and can go to the Applications>system settings>Printer configuration>job options and select the default orientation. It does pretty good if I leave it on automatic rotation.
