Well the other file selection dialogues use a very similar looking
interface, presumably that's simply because digikam uses the KDE
libraries though.
I can't actually think of another *application* which has a menu
option like digikam's "Open in filemanager", at least not one that I
use in xfce (with lots of Gnome stuff running).
The general approach in Gnome and/or xfce seems to be that it's up to
the window or session manager to decide what the default File Manager
utility is and that any application that wants to fire up a File
Manager will do it via the window/session hooks.
