[Digikam-users] exclude one folder from album list

You could create a new folder in the root, say "Photos", make it the root of an new collection and then move the tree of images into it. Then the trash folder would be outside the collection.
I haven't used digiKam for a while, so I'm assuming you can have multiple collections, and that it's allowable to remove the first one once everything has been moved. I'd back everything up before starting, including the database.
