After further review, I see that DigiKam does read the info from the EXIF ( I had thought is proprietary) , but not the side car file that ACDSee creates with raw files. so some of my work is saved, :)

First I think you should verify that the information is really in your files (using exiftool for instance) and not in ACDSee internal database.
If so, I think you should add a wish about that in bugs.kde.org and provide a example picture with tags to test.
