[Digikam-users] how to get plugins working from svn (kde4)

These don't appear to be the most recent (I saw updates come by when
running svn update today), but they're not anywhere else on my system. I
probably just don't understand how to build digikam and the plugins
properly :-(
Strangely, I couldn't find anything about kipi plugins on
http://wiki.kde.org/tiki-index.php?page=Digikam+Compilation+on+Kubuntu+Intrepid
How does digikam find the plugins? During compiling, or at runtime? I
did run ldconfig (but I should hope that the sudo make install process
also does this?).
Anyway, I thought I had installed kipi-plugins, so how do I make sure I
actually did successfully install them?
