Digikam uses gphoto2 to communicate with the camera, i.e.
it has no drivers itself.

You could try the following commands on the command-line
and report their output:
a) connect camera, what is the output of dmesg
   (only the camera related part)
b) gphoto2 -v
c) gphoto2 --list-ports
d) gphoto2 --auto-detect -L
e) gphoto2 --abilities
f) gphoto2 --list-folders
and post the output here.

Personally, I always use a card-reader to transfer the files
to the destination directory and then start digikam.
