Actually, you reminded me of "Proofs" feature I was used on BreezeBrowser, 
when I was still managing the photos on Windows:

I have used "Proofs" all the time for quickly generating pictures for various 
"export" purposes (send by e-mail, photos for VideoCD, XBOX...).

I do not use DNG, but for the rest I use some simple scripts around ufraw-
match and graphicsmagick

After the fast pace of editor improvements currently going on in SVN (pay 
attention to next digikam release!), I would not be surprised to see batch 
processing coming into digikam too. ;-)
